The Easter school holidays are a busy time on the water as Victorians head out fishing or sailing ahead of the cooler months.

However some boaters head out unprepared and find themselves requiring rescue by emergency services, turning a relaxing holiday into a stressful and embarrassing situation.

Nearly 4 out of every 5 reported marine incidents are for vessel disablement – usually something as avoidable as running out of fuel or experiencing engine failure. A smaller number of rescues are for serious situations such as sinking or capsizing.

In many cases, it comes down to simple oversights. These can leave boaters stranded far from the boat ramp: not having enough fuel, forgetting to maintain batteries and engines, or failing to check the weather before heading out.

Weather on the water can change quickly. Boaters should avoid being caught off guard by checking the weather both before they head out and while out on the water.

A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to safety. Before heading out, boaters should take a few essential steps:

  • Maintain your vessel, engine and safety equipment. Charge your boat’s batteries before you go.
  • Know the weather forecast before you set out – and check for changing weather conditions when out.
  • Ensure you have enough fuel: take enough fuel to get there and back, and an additional third as reserve.
  • Tell someone where you plan to go, so they can raise the alarm if you don’t return.
  • Have a way to call for help if you get into trouble. Having an EPIRB or marine radio is required in some situations – and carrying an EPIRB is recommended even when not required.
  • Always wear a lifejacket – it could save your life.

Safety equipment requirements differ depending on what waters you are boating on and the type of boat you have. Make sure you understand what’s required before you head out.
