Thousands of outdoor enthusiasts grabbed the opportunity to learn more about recreational boating safety with Safe Transport Victoria at last weekend’s National 4×4 Outdoors Show at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Our team was flat out each day answering boating questions, sharing safety tips, and handing out popular branded gear.

Showgoers were asked whether they knew how to inspect their own lifejackets, with 43 per cent answering “no” – giving ST Vic staff the opportunity for an impromptu hands-on demonstration lesson. Hundreds of boaters learned how to inspect, maintain and care for the equipment that could one day save their lives.

Lifejackets are essential safety equipment, required in most situations on the water – but they only work if they’re in good condition. The demonstrations gave boaters practical know-how to keep theirs fit for purpose.

Showgoers also snapped up the new Totes afloat tote bag, promoting wearing of lifejackets along with handy on-water safety items such as whistles, bung flags, carabiners, sunscreen and phone pouches. They also took their chance on the always-popular “spin to win” prize wheel.

Attending the 4×4 show is one of the many ways we engage face-to-face with the boating community, ensuring safety messages are heard where they matter most.
