Hundreds of jet skiers and beachgoers learned more about jet ski safety at exciting waterside engagement events held as part of Safe Transport Victoria’s Cool Your Jets: Stay in Control jet ski education program.

The lively waterside events were held in January at prime locations popular with jet skiers, on Saturday 18 at Safety Beach and Saturday 25 at Bonnie Doon. The events focused on educating skiers about sticking to the speed limit in 5-knot zones and slowing to 5 knots when near swimmers and other water users.

Safe Transport Victoria Director People and Communications, Shane Leversha, said the aim of the events was to deliver serious safety messages in a fun and engaging way.

“We had a lot of people drop into our events over the two days. There’s nothing like a sun-soaked afternoon of skill challenges to help everyone brush up on safety, and it was great to bring our messaging straight to the communities who love being out on the water.”

The events featured land-based skill challenges designed to test reflexes, with participants receiving free branded items such as sunscreen waterproof phone holders featuring the Cool Your Jets program messages.

The Safety Beach event also featured a 5-knot challenge course allowing members of the PWC Association of Victoria to show off their skills and see who could successfully pilot around the course without breaking the speed limit.

“It’s crucial to remember to Cool Your Jets and Stay in Control when out on a jet ski. Victoria’s waterways are wonderful places to explore,” said Shane. “Following the safety rules means everyone can have a fun day out on the water.”

The Cool Your Jets: Stay in Control key safety reminders include:

  • Ride within the speed limits in 5-knot zones near beaches and inland waterways.
  • Slow to 5-knots within 50 metres of swimmers, boats, other jet skis, and marine animals.
  • Always wear the appropriate lifejacket.
  • Ensure your jet ski, safety gear and lifejacket are well maintained
  • Be aware of your speed – if there is a wake, you are exceeding 5-knots.
