Creating safer journeys for passengers in wheelchairs was the aim of eight information sessions held recently by Safe Transport Victoria.
Rolled out as part of a new Safety starts with you: Championing Accessibility program, the sessions were specifically designed for drivers who hold a W-endorsement – the qualification enabling them to drive Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs).
Held at taxi depots in Melbourne, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Geelong, the sessions brought together around 85 dedicated drivers eager to improve the travel experience for passengers using wheelchairs or scooters. Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, drivers explored ways to make journeys not just safer but also more enjoyable for their passengers.
Key topics covered included:
- The importance of maintaining clear communication with passengers throughout the journey, such as explaining each step to ensure they feel safe and informed.
- Reviewing best practice when it comes to safely loading and unloading passengers in wheelchairs
- The proper securing process, including buckling the seatbelt and using floor restraints.
- Reminding why careful driving is important when carrying a wheelchair in the vehicle, and providing tips to make journeys more enjoyable for the passenger (such as slowing down over speed bumps).
- Advice on how to effectively check the weight of a wheelchair and discussing what to do if a wheelchair is too large for the vehicle.
- Advice on mobility aids that are not permitted to have a passenger sitting on them during the journey, (e.g., scooters, princess beds).
Adding a personal touch, drivers also had the opportunity to hear directly from a wheelchair passenger around his experiences and insights regarding safety in WAVs.
These sessions are a pivotal part of Safe Transport Victoria’s commitment to accessibility and safety through the Safety Starts with You: Championing Accessibility program. By empowering drivers with knowledge and skills, the initiative aims to make a tangible difference in the daily lives of wheelchair passengers.
