On 12 April, Federation Square transformed into a hub for safer travel, as Safe Transport Victoria launched the second phase of its Ride Smart, Ride Safe program.

The activation was designed to help passengers – especially women – with advice on how to identify and report unsafe or inappropriate behaviour when riding in taxis and rideshares.

Around 350 curious visitors dropped by the event for a free coffee, a chat, and simple tips on turning every trip into a smart, safe journey.

Visitors also slipped on VR-headsets for a captivating virtual reality experience that took them on a tour around the bustling CBD and along the iconic Great Ocean Road.

Adding to the visitor experience were the eye-catching branded giveaways, with more than 500 carabiners, wallet cards and mobile phone pop-up grips taken home, spreading the program’s powerful safety messages well beyond Fed Square.

A brief on-site survey invited visitors to share their thoughts on the taxi and rideshare industry, giving Safe Transport Victoria invaluable insights into public awareness and safety concerns. The feedback is set to shape future initiatives, ensuring that each ride becomes a safer journey.

Everyone deserves a safe ride

Harassment – whether verbal, physical or non‑verbal – has no place in a taxi or rideshare. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and speak up. Your report helps protect every passenger who travels after you.

What does harassment look like?

  • Unwanted comments, ‘compliments’ or sexual remarks
  • Catcalling, whistling or suggestive gestures
  • Unwanted physical contact or brushing against you
  • Photos or videos taken without your consent
  • Inappropriate jokes or persistent personal questions

For emergencies, always call Triple Zero (000). Report non‑urgent incidents to Safe Transport Victoria.
