To strengthen transport safety regulation and support safe commercial passenger vehicle, bus and marine journeys for all Victorians, from 1 September 2026, Safe Transport Victoria (ST Vic) will move into the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).

Some maritime functions relating to Local Knowledge Certificates, pilotage and pilotage services providers will move to Ports Victoria to better align responsibilities and avoid potential duplication for stakeholders.

Embedding ST Vic within DTP will enable us to focus on our core regulatory compliance and customer activities, while receiving governance and systems support from the department.

This move does not change ST Vic’s purpose of safe journeys, every time. The critical work we do with industry and community will continue, with no change to our branding or our role as regulator.

Safe Transport Victoria’s independence will remain and you can continue to engage with us as you always do.
