Taxi drivers across Victoria are now required to use the meter
The Victorian Government has changed the Commercial Passenger Vehicle Industry Regulations.
Drivers of all unbooked services from a taxi rank or hailed from the street across Victoria are now required to use the taxi meter for all trips.
- Maximum fare rates for unbooked services from a taxi rank or hailed from the street in Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo are set by the Essential Services Commission. Drivers may choose to offer a discounted fare, however the meter must still be on and the fare cannot exceed what is shown on the meter.
- Fares for unbooked trips that do not begin in the Melbourne Metropolitan or Urban or Large Regional Zones are not regulated.
The amended regulations came into force on 28 September, 2023.
