Lifting fees for wheelchair and mobility scooters

Safe Transport Victoria pays a lifting fee to the driver for helping MPTP members in wheelchairs or scooters get into wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs). The fee recognises the additional time it takes a driver to safely load and unload a passenger in a wheelchair or on a scooter. We also pay a partial fee for loading wheelchairs into other types of vehicles.

The lifting fee is indexed so it is good practice to keep informed by regularly checking the ST Vic website for changes. The current lifting fees effective from 24 November, 2025 are:

Full lifting fee (for all wheechair accessible vehicles in Victoria) $31.70
Partial lifting fee (if a driver loads or unloads a wheelchair into a regular taxi or sedan) $12.90

Lifting fee rules for drivers/BSPs

Lifting fees are automatically applied to services for MPTP members with a wheelchair card. Drivers cannot apply additional fees for these services.

Lifting fees are not applied if the MPTP member holds a card without a wheelchair endorsement. However, drivers may turn or leave the meter on while loading and unloading these passengers.

Drivers should notify Safe Transport Victoria if they provide a service to a passenger who needs a wheelchairendorsed MPTP card.

Drivers can turn or leave the meter on while loading and unloading non MPTP members taking a WAV service, in addition to any additional service fees they may wish to apply. Drivers and Booking Service Providers must be transparent with their passengers about the application of an additional fee in this situation.

Lifting fee information for passengers

MPTP members are never required to pay the lifting fee personally.

MPTP members requiring WAV services should ensure they have a wheelchair–endorsed card. An updated medical may be required if the members circumstances have changed. For further information, please contact the Customer Services team on 1800 638 802 or email [email protected]

For non-MPTP members or members without a wheelchair-endorsement on their MPTP card, please note that drivers can turn or leave the meter on while loading and unloading a wheelchair-bound passenger into a WAV service, in addition to any additional service fees they may wish to apply. Passengers can ask the drivers or Booking Service Providers about the application of an additional fee in this situation and request an estimate.

How to process transactions for members of interstate subsidy programs

Passengers from other states can travel in Victoria by using a paper voucher provided by their home state.

Drivers are urged to accept these paper vouchers and help improve the travelling experience of interstate visitors with mobility needs. (Ask your BSP first to make sure they can process the vouchers).

If you process an interstate voucher, make sure all the trip and fare details are filled out.

Your booking service provider will invoice Safe Transport Victoria for reimbursement of the subsidised amount.

If an out-of-state person who gets a subsidy because of their disability needs help getting in and out of the car, you cannot charge them extra. Instead, you can use the meter while helping them.
