WAV assessors play a critical role in ensuring drivers can safely and effectively provide services to passengers with disabilities. Assessments must align with the competency standard TLIC0026 – Provide wheelchair accessible services to passengers with disabilities.
Assessment requirements
Assessments must meet the following requirements:
- Be conducted in real time and run for a minimum of 60 minutes.
- Include a range of assessment methods, such as:
- Scenarios
- Practical exercises
- Case studies
- Role plays
- Simulations
- Use appropriate materials and equipment relevant to WAV services
- Clearly document the outcome (competent or not yet competent) and the reason for the decision
- Be delivered in a way the considers the driver’s literacy level and learning style.
Record keeping requirements
As an assessor you must:
- Maintain secure and confidential records of all completed assessments and checklists
- Ensure records are accurate, complete, and up to date
- Store records in line with privacy and data protection requirements
- Provide assessment records to Safe Transport Victoria upon request

Assessor responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- Providing each driver with a clear assessment outcome:
- Competent, or
- not yet competent
- Explain the reasons for the outcome and offer constructive feedback
- Supporting drivers to understand areas for improvement
- Review feedback from drivers and trainers
- Continuously improve assessment practices and processes
Becoming a WAV assessor
To become an approved assessor, you must provide the following to Safe Transport Victoria:
- A documented assessment strategy outlining the structure and content of your assessments
- Practical assessment plans, including tasks and assessor checklists
- A certified copy of your Certificate IV in Training and Assessment from a recognised provider
- Evidence of your relevant training and assessment experience
- Details of your current W-endorsement
Approved assessor contracts must be renewed every 12 months.
