Your rights when catching a taxi
The driver must turn on the meter
Politely remind the driver to start the meter if it’s not already running. If the driver refuses to start the meter, politely decline the ride and consider using another taxi or rideshare service.
There are limits to what you can be charged
In Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo, maximum fare rates apply. Familiarise yourself with the fare structure in your area to avoid surprises.

Say ‘no’ to touting
Touting is an illegal practice where drivers approach passengers directly or use unofficial signs to offer rides. It’s a common issue at airports and can lead to unexpected costs. Sticking to trusted, regulated transport options is the best way to ensure a trusted and reliable journey.
Why avoid touting?
- Unpredictable costs: Without regulation, you could be overcharged or encounter unexpected fees.
- Fair competition: Touting undermines legitimate drivers who follow the rules, making it harder for the industry to operate fairly.
How to avoid touting and ensure your journey is safe and legitimate
- Choose official ranks: Only use taxis or rideshares from designated ranks or booking platforms.
- Avoid unsolicited offers: Do not engage with drivers who approach you directly or display handwritten or unofficial signs.
- Book through trusted platforms: Use apps or official booking services to confirm your driver’s identity and fare.
- Check identification: Verify the driver’s credentials and ensure the vehicle matches your booking details before starting your journey. Look for signs that the vehicle is an authorised commercial passenger vehicle (CPV), such as official signage, symbols, or labels, which must be displayed while the vehicle is in service.
- Report touting: If you experience touting, report it here.
